This is close to the finalized painting and has yet to be fully filled in and blended together. When complete, I hope the viewer will have a deep sense of strength of the singled out Cross River Gorilla making his way through his quiet domain.

Placement of the branches was somewhat delicate as I wished for them to have their own character and yet not for them to take over the final image. At the same time they will help create the humid forest habitat atmosphere around the gorilla.
Step by step adding in more colour to all surfaces, highlighting intended areas as well as painting in the Cross River Gorilla’s foot whilst planning out my next stages toward a pre-conceived fore and background.
A few days later - I have now painted in the body area, even adding in a little red colour to the head so as I may gain a little perspective on the colours I will later use toward the feel of the main image itself.
Follow the progress step by step as I paint a Cross River Gorilla using acrylics. This is the first picture of my new painting - I am very much looking forward to this one as it will show this gorilla in its natural environment. At this stage, I am composing the preliminary drawing directly from field sketches and my photographic references and I blocked in the area I am working on.
